Lofts and Bunk Beds. You may choose to make the most of your space with a bunk bed or loft in your residence hall room.
Learn how to best fit a loft or bunk bed in your room.
- If you are living in Manchester, Hewett, Dunn-Barton or Walker Halls or Clay or Van Buren Houses in Watterson Towers, then your room is already equipped with metal beds that can be made into a bunk unit. Metal bunkable beds may also be found scattered throughout some of the other residence halls.
- If you want to construct your own loft or bunk bed, you may do so within the following guidelines:
- the loft of bunk bed must be free standing.
- the unit should not block your window or heating unit.
- you may remove the bed frame from your room; however, storage is not available in the residence halls and the bed frame must be returned before you check out of your room.
- mattresses must remain in the room.
- 25 percent or less of the habitable floor space can be occupied by your loft.
- tools used in the construction of the loft in the student’s room must be hand or battery operated since electric power tools are prohibited.
- Wilkins hall and Haynie hall has been newly refurbished and all rooms will have new furniture, including beds that can be lofted at two heights. Therefore, residents will not be allowed to bring in their own loft kits or to remove any furniture from their rooms. (You will be notified about how to reserve a loft kit at a later date.)
- Because of variances between rooms, you are urged to wait until you arrive on campus so you can take the exact room and bed frame measurements before building your loft.
- Here are some places you could purchase a loft:
- local hardware, building center, bookstore
- former student
- off of Internet sites

- Illinois State University does not sell lofts or provide instructions for building a loft.
