Friendly Tips from the Association of Residence Halls about Move-In
When you arrive in the packed car, minivan, or even possibly a truck, there will be an array of students moving in, just as you are about to do. Have no fear; we will make moving in as smooth as possible. Move-In Leaders and Movers & Shakers comprised of staff, students and faculty will be assisting you in every way they can.

Parking --
Maps are on-line and available in every residence hall lobby during move-in. Please park in the designated areas or you will be either ticketed or towed. There will be ISU staff members on golf carts: feel free to flag them down if you need a ride to another area of campus (it is free!).
Who Should Accompany You While You Move-In? --
It is a good idea to bring at least three people (driver, helper and student) to assist. This will make move-in faster and more pleasant for you. If you can, bringing your own dolly with you to move in will help greatly. However, while bringing more people is helpful, please limit your vehicles to one (as much as possible) and avoid oversized vehicles or trailers. Given the large number of people moving in at the same time, limiting the number of vehicles and oversized vehicles will keep traffic flowing at a smooth pace.
What do You do When You Get to Your Building? --
After you arrive, the student should go into the building to check in and receive their key. The student then can go to the room to find out exactly where it is. Meanwhile, the helper should go get a cart (if you did not bring your own) while the driver remains with the car. Once a cart is obtained, both “helper” and “driver” should unload the student’s belongings on the sidewalk (move-in leaders will assist).
To ensure that everyone gets their turn in a timely fasten, please move fast and follow instructions (they are given for your benefit and for everyone’s benefit). Once the belongings are unloaded, please have the “helper” stay with the belongings while the “driver” moves the vehicle to a designated parking area. The vehicle should not be in front of the building for any longer than 15 minutes. There will be police and tow trucks present to help keep traffic moving.
What can You Bring with You? --
Go to the "What to Bring" page to double check your list and the check the "What Not to Bring" List to review those items that are not allowed in the residence halls. In addition to that, keep in mind that the more belongings you have, the longer your move-in will be. Therefore, plan on bringing just what you need until your return home again. There will be other opportunities (such as Labor Day) to bring back more belongings (for example, winter clothing will not be needed for at least another month and a half
Bed Risers and Cable Cords --
These are available for purchase in the residence halls’ lobbies during move-in. After move-in they may be purchased from the ARH office in North Watterson Towers. Bed risers are 10 dollars/set and are available in white or black. Cable cords are 5 dollars/apiece. These items will be sold on a “first come, first serve” basis while supplies last.
Lofts --
If you purchased a loft from a company, contact the specific company on delivery information. Any loft must be free standing and cannot cover more than 2/3 of the floor space. Residents of West Campus (Haynie and Wilkins) are not allowed to provide their own loft. For those residents, lofts are provided (free of charge) by University Housing Services on a “first come, first serve” basis. Contact your RA if you are interested.
Textbooks --
These can be purchased at either Alamo II or Barnes and Noble ISU. You may pick up books any time, from move-in through the first week of classes. Given the amount of traffic on campus at that time, we strongly urge to walk rather than use a vehicle to take care of your errands on campus. Driving to the bookstores will add to the amount of traffic and take you much longer to get there.
