The Graduate Assistant position requires the incumbent to understand, support, and interpret both University and residential life policies and operations. Some duties of the Graduate Assistant may vary and are determined by situational needs at any given time.
POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Graduate Assistant will gain experience in various aspects of Apartment Living operations. The Graduate Assistant reports to the Associate Director of University Housing Services, who is responsible for Apartment Living operations.

QUALIFICATIONS
Admittance into a gradate program at Illinois State University and a cumulative grade point average 3.0 (4.0 scale) or above for the last 60 hours of undergraduate course work is required. Post hiring qualifications include maintaining a course load of not more than 12 credit hours during Spring and Fall semesters and at least 1 hour during the summer session, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of not less than a 3.0. Familiarity with Apartment Living or residence hall operations in preferred. Employment is contingent on criminal background investigation pursuant to Public Act 88-629.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The typical period of employment will be from June 1 through May 30.
The Graduate Assistant must maintain residency in the designated complex apartment assigned by University Housing Services.
The Graduate Assistant must be admitted into a degree program and maintain enrollment of at least nine hours and not more than 12 credit hours per semester. The Graduate Assistant must remain in good standing with the University during the employment term.
Travel requests must be submitted in writing one week prior to the requested day of travel. Extended vacation requests must be submitted in writing thirty days in advance. No more than two consecutive weeks may be scheduled. During times such as semester breaks, graduation, and registration, coverage must be maintained; and subsequently some vacation/travel times may be denied.
Remuneration for the position will be an unfurnished two-bedroom apartment with all utilities provided (including campus telephone service), a tuition waiver, and a monthly stipend of $700.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsibility for the primary development and facilitation of programs geared toward addressing the needs of single undergraduate and graduate students, single parent families, married students, and the Apartment Living Staff.
- Assist in the selection and supervision of Community Aides, Custodian Managers, and Property Damage Appraisers.
- Provide support to the Community Aides and all the students under his/her supervision
- Assist in providing training for the Community Aides specifically in the areas of advising Residents Associations, community development, policy and procedures, and diversity.
- Serve as the primary composer and editor of the monthly newsletter and major publications
- Advise and work closely with the Residents Associations of both complexes and serve as its co-fiscal agent.
- Serve as the liaison for Community Aides responsible for the Residents Associations and the central office of University Housing Services.
- Interpret and enforce University and Apartment Living policies, procedures, and regulations
- Assist with on-duty coverage, check-ins and check-outs of residents when required.
- Responsible for managing time and establishing work priorities.
- Attend the weekly in-service training and the annual training for UHS professional staff.
- Participate in the implementation of learning organization and Educating Illinois project.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
